Things to Know About Dermal Filler

Dermal filler is one of the most requested treatments at Glow Balance, and we’re excited to talk about what it is and how it’s used. Filler is used across the medical aesthetic industry and is popular across the world due to the subtle, natural results that use of filler brings.

What does filler do?

As the name suggests, dermal filler is designed to fill in wrinkles and folds in the skin that are the result of aging and genetics. In addition to filling wrinkles and folds, the filler is also frequently used to replace lost volume in the mid-face (think cheeks), add volume to the lips, raise the eyebrows, and add definition to the jawline.

How long does filler last?

Most dermal fillers are temporary. Filler is made of biodegradable materials that are naturally absorbed by the body over time and last from six months to five years, depending on what the filler is made of.

What are fillers made of?

Collagen is a naturally occurring protien, and a major part of skin and body tissue. Collagen fillers last approximately 3-4 months.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA):

HA is a molecule that is naturally found in the human body that and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which is great for adding volume. When hyaluronic acid is injected beneath the skin, it not only aids in plumping up the areas that have lost volume, but it also attracts water to the area to help plump things up.

Calcium hydroxyapatite:

Calcium hydroxylapatitre is commonly found in human teeth and bones and when it’s used to treat wrinkles, the particles are suspended in a gel-like solution that is injected into the face or hands. Results from calcium hydroxylapatite can be expected to last around 18 months after the injections.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)

PLLA is another man-made biodegradable material and is long-lasting (approximately two years) and usually given in a series of injections over a period of several months. Many dermal fillers are also formulated to include lidocaine to help reduce sensitivity during injection in the treatment area.

What are the risks of using dermal filler?

Each dermal filler product is different, and so risks will vary. Possible side effects of filler injections include bruising, infection, and localized swelling. Most adverse reactions are mild and temporary, however, there’s a possibility that more serious side effects may occur. If you have questions about dermal filler please reach out or schedule a consultation with our provider, Patricia Stokes, ARNP to find out what kind of filller will best help you achieve your aesthetic goals!
